The shopping cart… and the taste crisis
“Friday…
Emptiness is deadly and “Eid is approaching.”
I decided to buy a new abaya online.
I went to all the pages with good reviews—Oswa, Hijab, pages from other countries…
Every time I chose a modest outfit or a long veil, I got suggestions:
— “Could you try something with bolder colors?
Aren’t you going to enter summer 2025 in a colorful, loose dress?
What do you think of a more modern look… but style?”
I laughed, my heart aching.
Every now and then, I saw ads:
— “Fashionable abaya… sexy abaya… even modest clothes with slits!”
I closed the website and thought to myself:
“Has modesty become a commodity?
Why are even the pages that are supposed to support us pressuring us to change things in order to sell?”
I went back to searching for simple abayas…
And I found Aswa’s page writing:
“We respect your choice, whatever it is… and support you. Go ahead.” Your identity without compromise!”
This little message felt like my support in the market.
I bought an abaya—not the most expensive or the most elegant… but one that felt like it resembled my heart.
