🕌 The story of “Al-Saffa”… the first university dormitory, but with a spirit of faith
If you ever visit the Prophet’s Mosque, there’s a very quiet area at the back, a place people pass by quickly… But back then, this place was the heart of faith: the Suffah.
It wasn’t just a place to sleep… It was a school, a home, a university, and a center of learning… all in a small space.
🌙 Who were the People of the Suffah?
The People of the Suffah were poor Companions who left their homes and possessions for the sake of the Hijrah (migration).
No family to take them in… No ready-made houses… So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) built a simple place for them inside the Prophet’s Mosque called the Suffah.
There were about 80–100 men.
Some of them became very prominent figures later on:
– Abu Hurairah (may God be pleased with him)
– Salman al-Farisi
– Ka’b ibn Malik
– Hudhayfah ibn al-Yaman
And others who became stars of the Ummah (Muslim community).
📘 What did they do there?
Their day was simple… but full of meaning:
They would wake up at dawn in the mosque
They would learn the Quran And the Hadith:
They attended the Prophet’s ﷺ gatherings.
They helped the Muslims with work.
And they fought alongside the Prophet ﷺ when needed.
Their lives were very simple… but their faith was immense.
🤍 The Prophet’s ﷺ concern for them.
The most beautiful part of the story?
The Prophet ﷺ always inquired about them, visited them, and cared for their sustenance.
He used to say to his companions:
“Whoever has food should invite the people of the Suffah.”
Meaning, all the people of Medina held them in high regard.
And this is a great lesson:
Simplicity is not weakness… and scarcity is not the end… It is intention that elevates a person’s status.
🌸 What does this have to do with our lifestyle?
In this age of speed, crowds, and social media images… the story of the Suffah tells us:
Simplicity is beauty.
Comfort is a blessing.
And more important than the way you dress… is the heart you wear.
The Suffah was an example of spiritual comfort… and the girls who They prioritize comfort in their clothing, and they understand this lesson well.
That’s why the spirit of “Saffa” is close to the spirit of “Asma”: Comfort + Simplicity + Choices that keep you close to yourself and your values… without pretense or pressure.
