Family gatherings… and the strangest question on Eid

Eid in our house means crowds, food, laughter… and sometimes not-so-nice questions!
As I entered the living room, the whole family was staring:
My aunts, my cousins, my cousins…
Everyone was looking at my new abaya and headscarf.

My aunt “Soso” said in a loud voice:
— “My daughter, how are you going to get married like this? Why don’t you wear something like what your cousins are wearing!”

Laughter spread throughout the room, and looks were fixed on me like a spotlight.
One of the relatives started laughing and said to her friend:
— “Look… I feel like I’m in a black and white movie!”

They laughed, but inside I felt like someone had hit me with a hammer.
At one point, I felt unable to respond, my mind revolving around one question:
“Why are the people who are supposed to love you the most the ones who annoy you the most?”

My mom tried to laugh and change the subject…
But my cousin said it bluntly:
— “You’re beautiful, I swear… but why don’t you keep it a little trendy?
We’re all trying to be stylish in the family! Don’t you want to dress like these girls?”

I raised my eyes and looked at her calmly:
— “I’m happy this way… If you think beauty lies in this kind of clothing, I see beauty in what makes me comfortable and pleases God.”

A moment of silence…
One of the boys tried to change the subject…
But I felt, despite all the stares, that standing up for my principles was the true celebration.

Have you also been exposed to a similar situation in the family?
Have you broken your guard with a smile? Or have you decided to stand up for yourself, even if alone?
Share your situation or even a word you said to make you feel comfortable in the midst of the family gathering…
Maybe your support can be a lifeline for a girl sitting alone in a situation like this.
